Decent Death just got 8/10 on Kaaoszine review. The review is unfortunately only in Finnish. Here’s a short summary of the review in English:
In this apocalyptic year when records are released in a very tight pace, it is really hard to separate shit from shinola in this field of oversupply. In this battle Coredust (which hails from Helsinki and releases their debut on May 9) stands out.
The records starts with an intro in which you can already hear both growling and female vocals. Already at this stage the nature of the record starts to unfold and so far it looks really good. The next song Without Disguise shows what this debutant can do. Song by song this band seems more and more interesting.
The title track starts with a manic, slightly disturbing synth melody which fits the song like a glove. Considering the synth arrangements used in the record, they bring their own distinct flavor and one is delighted to notice that while mostly in the background, they really serve the songs and are not just a filler. Also the drummer Jaska Raatikainen, who was asked to handle the skin beating on the record as a session musician, performs his task exceptionally well proving that he can handle any kind of musical challenge.
It should be noted that the guitar riffs play a major role on the record and all the melodies and even the small nuances are carefully thought out. Awesome. The seventh song “Brainwash” is a very distinctive composition even considering the very original sound of the record. It includes moody atmospherics, raging and hypnotic, hooky melodies. The song is definitely one of the best in the record. In this song, the singer Esa Salminen once again proves his skills.
All and all we have a very strong and competent debut album here. There are some minor issues here and there but nothing so significant to force you to analyze it further. Every full length album has almost always some weaker tunes on it but on this one there are only a few. When you consider that there are this many really good songs, you can only predict a bright future.
